Part Three - Original Prints
The "Gallery of the American Automobile" original lithograph series by Clarence P. Hornung was completed in 1965. The series in four parts contains 100 colored lithographs of historic American automobiles depicting the development of the automobile in the United States from 1853 to 1915. There were only 500 sets and many are in private collections, libraries and museums. Therefore, the actual and original prints are very rare. Each vehicle was carefully produced as a color screenprint on 24" x 14" heavy art paper.
The four cylinder Cadillac D was an expensive finely styed car. It had a running board and divided front seats.The motor was 30 horsepower and capable of speeds up to 50 mph. The car cost $2,800.

The Autocar Runabout was known for its hill climbing ability. All control levers were located at the steering wheel. The motor developed 12 horsepower and the price was $1,000.

This vehicle finished the 1200 mile Glidden Tour with a perfect score. The engine was cast aluminum and was considered a mechanical masterpiece. The price was $3,000.

The Packard S-24 was luxurious, yet rugged vehicle and capable of limited cross-country touring. It had three foward speeds and one reverse. The price was $4,000.

The Maxwell was among the best of the small cars. It had an efficient cooling system, reliable engine and transmission. The vehicle was capable of speeds up to 35 mph.

This car was one of the first to have an enclosure for the driver and front seat passenger. It had a four cylinder engine of 35-40 horsepower with three forward speeds and one reverse. The price was $2,750.

In 1908 the first of 15 Model T's were built. Under Henry Ford the assembly line produced low cost and efficent vehicles for the masses.The Model T easily became the most famous car in the world. The 20 horsepower engine was cast in a solid block covered by a detachable cylinder head. The car was very dependable and a three point suspension system ws used. The price was $850.

The Hudson Roadster was considered to be "a good car at a good price." The body was secured to the chassis by four large bolts. It was powered by a 20 - 25 horsepower enginge and had a large 2 gallon gas tank. The price started at $1,000.

The Buick 10 proved to be Buick's "bread and butter car." The motor was a four cylinder with a 18 horsepower rating. The transmission provided only two forward speeds and one reverse. More than 11,000 were produced and the price was $1,150.
